HFM offers new environmental asset to clients

HFM Asset Management has teamed with CarbonSystems to offer a new web based tool for tracking and managing the energy and environmental performance of its property-sector clients.

HFM is a consultancy company providing practical sustainability solutions to commercial office, hospitality, strata, retail, and high-rise residential building operators.

Its clients include Mirvac, Charter Hall, GDI Property Group, BGC, Centro Property Group, Accor, Seashells Hospitality Group, and Woodside and the Water Corporation in WA.

The new Tracking Monitoring Analysis and Reporting tool (TMAR) provides information for building-owners and managers to better manage building environmental performance and meet compliance based reporting requirements.

The system is a property-centric version of CarbonSystems’ Energy and Carbon Intelligence System (ECIS) tailored to meet the needs of HFM’s clients.

One of HFM’s services is providing monthly reports to property clients detailing their electricity, gas, water and fuel consumption. The reports form the basis of their ongoing performance management program. HFM’s client-advisory team utilise these to demonstrate where clients could make efficiency gains and cost reductions in areas such as energy and water use.

However, the company’s tracking and advisory service wasn’t scalable, according to HFM Business Analyst Matt Holmes, who says adopting TMAR has broadened its client service offering.

“Our former method of collecting paper-based client utility data and inputting it into excel spreadsheets for analysis wasn’t scalable given our rapidly growing client list in the property sector,” he says.

“One benefit of TMAR is to speed and streamline the collection and management of environment data from billers and business systems, allowing us to better characterize patterns and variations in client data.

“The platform’s powerful functionality, including features such as exception reporting, automated error checking and data accuracy reports, means our clients get financial-grade business reporting about their environmental performance,” Holmes says.

“TMAR also captures weather and rainfall information, which is invaluable for identifying weather related energy use patterns apart from other operational spikes and troughs.”

“Performance management via energy and water tracking systems will become an intrinsic component of building management in the future” says Damien Moran, General Manager of HFM. “We’ve been doing this for over seven years and the concept is really gaining traction as building owners and operators realise the operational insight TMAR can provide.”

“TMAR delivers a high-definition picture of energy, water, fuel and carbon emissions throughout an organization,” says CarbonSystems’ Managing Director, David Solsky.

“It also provides a performance management framework for internal benchmarking and reveals the impacts of environmental and carbon abatement programs, which are essential for driving internal engagement, accountability and business transformation for the low-carbon economy of the future.

“Critically, TMAR delivers robust financial grade data on emissions and other environmental data so HFM’s clients can assess the impact, payback period and the return on investment of their efficiency and environmental initiatives.

CarbonSystems took the hard work out of reporting to the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting System. We like their technology and their service, and we’re using their system to assess payback on our water and energy-efficiency programs
